广州大学于2000年由广州师范学院、华南建设学院（西院）、广州教育学院、原广州大学和广州高等师范专科学校等高校合并组建而成，实行广东省与广州市共建、以市为主的管理体制。1958年开始招收普通本科生，1983年获硕士学位授予权，2006年获博士学位授予权。

　　学校现有大学城、桂花岗两个校区，占地面积141.8公顷(大学城131.67公顷，桂花岗10.13公顷)，建筑面积88万平方米。现有24个学院、66个本科专业、42个硕士点、2个博士点，拥有教育硕士和工程硕士两个专业学位点，在校全日制本科生19682人，研究生819人。学校拥有省级重点学科12个；省部共建国家重点实验室培育基地1个，省市级重点实验室5个,省市人文社科研究基地3个，省市实验教学示范中心3个；省市名牌专业11个；省市精品课程11门；学校被批准为全国大学英语教学改革示范点和全国大学生文化素质教育基地（联合）。有两院院士2人，国家有突出贡献中青年专家3人，国家杰出青年基金获得者2人，国家首届高校教学名师奖获得者、和国家“百千万人才工程”第一、二层次人选各1人，全国高等学校教学指导委员会委员13人，享受国务院政府特殊津贴专家26人，省、市优秀专家15人。2003年至今，学校获得国家级科研项目75项，国家科技进步二等奖1项，发明专利26项。

■Guangzhou University

　　Guangzhou University was founded in 2000 through the merging of the tertiary educational institutions previously known as Guangzhou Normal University, South China Institute of Construction, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Junior Teachers' College, and Guangzhou Institute of Education. Guangzhou University, co-sponsored by Guangdong Province and Guangzhou Municipality, is mainly administered by Guangzhou Municipality. The former Guangzhou University started to recruit college students from 1958, procured the authorization to confer master's degree in 1983 and doctor's degree in 2006.  

　　The University has two campuses, respectively at the Guangzhou University Town and Guihuagang area, covering an area of 141.8 hectares (131.67 in the University Town and 10.13 in Guihuagang) and with construction area of 880,000 square meters. There are 24 schools, 66 bachelor degree majors, 42 master degree majors, 2 doctor's degree majors, and two special master degree majors: Master of Education and Master of Engineering. There are altogether 19,682 full-time undergraduate students and 819 postgraduate students. The university boasts 12 provincial key disciplines, one national key training base sponsored by both Guangdong province and the Ministry of Education, 5 provincial and municipal key labs, 3 provincial and municipal research bases in humanity and social sciences, 3 provincial and municipal exemplary centers for experimental teaching, 11 majors that are provincially and municipally famous, and 11 disciplines that are provincially and municipally rated as of top quality. The university is approved as one of the experimental bases for innovative national college English teaching and one of the (joint) national bases for the quality-oriented education of college students. Two professors of the university have proudly entered the rank of Chinese academicians, respectively belonging to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Another 3 faculty members are awarded as National Young Experts for Outstanding Contributions; Two winners of the National Fund for Distinguished Young Scientists; One winner of the first National Outstanding University Teachers Award; Two winners of the National "Tens of Thousands of Talents" Project (both within the first and second level of talents); 13 members of the National Teaching Advisory Committee; 26 experts enjoying the special State Council Allowance; 15 provincial and municipal outstanding experts. Since 2003, the university has procured 75 state-level science and research projects, one Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and 26 national patents.
